Garage addition, 2004 Part III, December 4 - 15 |

![]() Dec. 4. This is the water in the footer trenches. The footer is that plastic-covered thing under the ladder.
Dec 8. Wertman Masonary is here to lay the block. They walk around on boards thrown over deep holes just as the B & B people and Greg do.
This is five courses of block laid and ready for backfilling.
While Wertman's crew laid block, Greg drilled holes in the basement wall to run water pipes and electric lines through.
Greg was afraid someone would run into the pipes sticking out of the basement wall just inside the door, so he put signs on the door and on the pipes. I had a couple of close calls even with the signs, so it's a good thing he did, because they are about eye level.
Second load of stone and Greg is leveling it out. They put some stone between the new wall and the porch pillars which would be outside the wall. The rest of the outside will be backfilled with dirt. Dec. 8 & 9 were real days of accomplishment. Now the rest of the block wall will go up.
Dec 15. This is where we are and where we will stay until the temperature rises.

![]() There's Greg standing on the footer. They have placed a wider footer right in front of him to build one double-wide area of block to support a beam. It's Dec 7. The vertical rebar are protruding from the footer.
Still Dec 7 and the block have been delivered. Greg drilled the holes for the rebar and inserted them this morning.
Dec 9. This is a stone thrower. It was needed because the area inside the block wall had to be filled and that is the only way to get to it with the mud and the tight work area.
Now quite a bit of stone is within the area.
This is the stone slinger from the back, the business end. The operator works from a platform on the truck, aiming the stone and raising and lowering the speed of the engine. The truck is sort of a giant hopper behind the operator. The stone falls down into another smaller hopper type contraption which throws stone for a long distance if they need to.
The Stone Slinger is all done and the long chute which threw stone is being folded up onto the side of the truck. This truck is property of Moritz. Go to |
