The New Tolerance (How a cultural movement threatens to destroy you, your faith, and your children)
by Josh McDowell and Bob Hostetler

This book is a must read for everybody.  Find what your children are learning in school and why.  Understand why the Christian faith is being attacked by others. Learn what people really mean when they talk about tolerance and intolerance?  Find out why Christians are called intolerant.  This book was a real eye opener.  It is very well written with many true examples.  Did you know that in May 5, 1995 a judge made it illegal to speak the name of Jesus Christ in a specific setting with a sentence of six months in jail?   What is happening to the Christian in today's world?  This book helps us to gain an understanding of what is happening around us and how to deal with it.   Tolerance as it is defined today is a real threat to the Christian with more and more Christians letting it creep into their lives.  Learn what it is and the affect it is having on us and our children!  Again, I state that this book should be read by all Christians.  Published by Tyndale House Publishers, Inc., Wheaton, Illinois.   ISBN 0-8423-7088-9  Copyright 1998.

Experiencing God (Knowing and Doing the Will of God)
by Henry T. Blackaby & Claude V. King

An intense thirteen week study designed for small groups.   This study is not for the new Christian in my opinion nor should it be done alone, but is an excellent aid in developing a close intimate relationship with God when done as a group study.  A new Christian will come away with more questions than answers.   One of the biggest problems I had in this study was getting past the title of the study.  The book would be more correct with its subtitle "Knowing and Doing the Will of God".  I believe I gained new knowledge in some areas through this study, but in others I struggled with the authors always perfect examples that included no failures and his way of always stating that a specific change must occur and not taking into account a persons closeness to God at that time.  An example is that they state in principle #6 "You must make major adjustments in your life to join God in what He is doing."  I don't believe this is always the case.   A number of other places they make very specific statements using words like will or must that I believe should be replaced with words like may or might.   While not agreeing with the authors in all points, there was nothing that I found in the doctrine that I disagreed. There were some problems I encountered that were due to the words the authors used, but once understood in their context, the statements were okay.  This is one of the reasons I believe the new Christian would have problems.   If accepting the words or phrases on their surface would cause problems if you didn't understand what the authors were trying to say.  This is evident in the title itself. If you don't understand how they are using the phrase "Experiencing God", you will believe that book is dealing with feelings and not the truth or fact of God's Word.  The study is published by Lifeway Press, Nashville, Tennessee.   ISBN 0-8054-9954-7 Copyright 1990.  Video and audio tapes are available as a supplement to the study.

Games (for Youth Groups)
1997 by Youth Specialties, Inc.

I came across this book recently and was very impressed by the selection of games within the book.  The selections include indoor, outdoor, living room, large groups, small groups and sports games.  There were alot of games that we have never tried before but look to be fun to play.  There are even included prepared sheets for games that require pencil and paper that you are allowed to copy for your use in the youth group.  It is a 173 page book with multiple games per page.   The book is published by Zondervan Publishing House and costs $19.99 (US).   This is a must have book if you are having problems finding games for your youth group.  Is saw they also have a book similar called Games 2.

Discovering Wisdom, The Daily Bible Focus - Basic Level
1997 Moody Press

This is a quiet time journal that is sold in quarterly sections.  Each day scripture verse(s) are given for study with seven or more questions pertaining to the verses and how they apply to your life.  This quiet time is an excellent resource for all levels of believers.  It is one of the better quiet times I have used if not the best.  I have always liked a quiet time that required you to write down thoughts and information about the verses being studied and this quiet time does this in an excellent way.  It comes loose leaf with holes that fit either a Day Timer or a Franklin Day Planner.  There is also a whole LifeFocus planner from Moody Press that can be used with this quiet time.  If you don't presently do a quiet time, give this a try.  Published by Moody Press.

Astronomy and the Bible - Questions & Answers
by Donald B. DeYoung

Donald DeYoung is a professor and physicist as well as a believer in Jesus Christ.  While most astronomy books give an evolutionary and secular view of science, DeYoung attempts to bring some balance to astronomy by presenting a Christian perspective.  This book is intended as a resource for the classroom and home and is broken up into six parts; The Earth and Moon, The Solar System, The Stars, Galaxies and the Universe, General Science, and Technical Terms and Ideas.  There are 100 questions and answers this book addresses.  While some on the questions may sound simple, I was suprised at some of the answers since DeYoung shows you that some things you were taught as facts in school are in reality only theories.  It was also interesting to find out some of the facts that are ignored because they don't support the "old age" theory of the universe and realy support a "young earth".  This is good book to help answer some of the tough questions young people ask.  Published by Baker Book House, Grand Rapids, Michigan 49516.  ISBN: 0-8010-2991-0   Copyright 1989.  Ninth printing, July 1993.

Defeating Darwinism by Opening Minds
by Phillip E. Johnson

This book aims to give a good high-school education in how to think about evolution. It does not go into scientific detail to defeat Darwinism, but goes to the root and discusses how to identify false assumptions and "baloney." The author recommends his book to high-school students, college students, parents, teachers, youth workers, pastors, and scientists whose education didn't encourage them to take a skeptical look at the claims of Darwinism theory. I suggest that the book may be too difficult for most high school students due to the abstract concepts and discussions, but I do recommend it to be read before starting college. Published in 1997 by InterVarsity Press. ISBN 0-8308-1360-8 & ISBN 0-8308-1362-4. Other books by the author include Darwin on Trial and Reason in the Balance.

Right From Wrong
by Josh McDowell & Bob Hostetler

A disturbing book about what is happening with our youth of today that is backed with statistics and true stories. This book is not just about unsaved youth, but speaks to the youth that make up our youth groups. It gives evidence that many of our youth cannot affirm that an objective standard for right and wrong even exists. This book will help you by providing a biblical and practical blueprint for understanding and teaching moral absolutes. I highly recommend this book to youth leaders, pastors, and parents. The authors have done and excellent job of going right to the heart of problems and situations that we find the youth of today facing in their lives. Published in 1994 by Word Publishing. ISBN 0-8499-1079-X and ISBN 0-8499-3604-7.

Some People!
(on finding friends and repairing relationships)
by Mark Oestreicher * Carol Smith * Sue Leaf * Terri Hibbard
&
I Believe!
(on owning and living your faith)
by Steve Dickie * Rick Thompson * Randy Southern * Lin Johnson

I have found these lesson books to be an excellent resource for teaching both the junior high and with small changes the senior high. They each have 13 lessons that are very well written supplying background information, on what you want to do, where you will find the anwers (Bible references), suggestions on ice breakers that apply to the lesson, and suggestions on what you will need (supplies). Detailed information is given in the lessons and it is broken down into sections that make it easy to modify what you will and will not use. Excellent work sheets are given with each lesson that may be duplicated for pass outs. These work sheets I have found to be quite interesting and hold the students attention. Enough information is given to have a 1 hour lesson if you so choose or reduce and teach the parts that best apply to your group. One of the best lesson resources I have found. These books were last copyrighted in 1992 and are hard to find and may be out of print. If you see one on the shelf, grab it, it may be your only chance!
