The first descriptions of Asperger's Syndrome were from Hans Asperger, a pediatrician, who did intensive research on the syndrome later named after him. Individuals with this disorder communicate mostly through one-sided conversations where they discuss their particular interests with extreme fascination and knowledge.
- An individual with Asperger's Syndrome does not understand turn-taking or changing subjects in conversations.
- An individual with Asperger's Syndrome does not understand the need for social interactions.
- An individual with Asperger's Syndrome does not understand social cues, such as eye contact and body language.
- An individual with Asperger's Syndrome does not understand most abstract ideas. Everything said to an individual with Asperger's is taken literally as they are very concrete.
- Routines are vital and must be rigidly maintained.
- Interests are generally limited to a specific topic, but mass amounts of information are collected and recalled by the Asperger's individual on their particular topic of interest.
Recommendations to parents or Asperger's individuals:
- Find a support group in your area and know you are NOT alone!
- If your child is in grade school, ask about what services are available and ask for them to be put into your child's educational plan! You will need a doctor to give your child an official diagnosis. The school has to provide the services or find another school that will.
- Speech therapy can aid in the use of social cues and turn-taking.
- Physical therapy may help the clumsiness sometimes described in individuals with Aspergers'.
- Occupational therapy may be recommended in an effort to help with the over-sensitivity described by persons with this disorder.
