This list is not intended as a "check-list" of items that you will always see in autism, nor is it meant to take the place of a trained professional's evaluation.
If many of these sound familiar to you, please get a professional evaluation. A trained psychiatrist in your area can assist you.
Early intervention has been proven to decrease developmental delays and improve the chances of a more normal life for your child.
People with autism may exhibit some or all of the following behaviors:
Difficulty in mixing with other children of the same age.
Insistence on sameness; resists changes in routine or environment.
Inappropriate laughter or giggling.
No real fear of dangers (such as traffic, strangers, etc.).
Little or no eye contact.
Lack of response to normal teaching methods.
Sustained odd play (such as spinning objects, lining up objects, etc.).
Apparent insensitivity or oversensitivity to pain.
Echolalia (repeating words or phrases instead of normal language).
Perference to being alone over engaging with others.
May not want to be touched (kissed, hugged, etc.) except when they approach you for that.
Noticeable physical overactivity or extreme underactivity.
Tantrums or extreme distress for no apparent reason.
Lack of response to verbal cues or requests, as if they cannot hear.
Inappropriate attachment to objects.
Uneven developmental skills; may not want to kick ball but can stack blocks.
Difficulty in expressing needs, use of gestures or pointing instead of words.
Difficulty in understanding what is said regardless of ability to perform specific task before.
