This list is not intended as a "check-list" of items that you will always see in autism, nor is it meant to take the place of a trained professional's evaluation.

If many of these sound familiar to you, please get a professional evaluation. A trained psychiatrist in your area can assist you.

Early intervention has been proven to decrease developmental delays and improve the chances of a more normal life for your child.

People with autism may exhibit some or all of the following behaviors:

  • Difficulty in mixing with other children of the same age.

  • No real fear of dangers (such as traffic, strangers, etc.).

  • Little or no eye contact.

  • Lack of response to normal teaching methods.

  • Sustained odd play (such as spinning objects, lining up objects, etc.).

  • Apparent insensitivity or oversensitivity to pain.

  • Echolalia (repeating words or phrases instead of normal language).

  • Perference to being alone over engaging with others.

  • May not want to be touched (kissed, hugged, etc.) except when they approach you for that.

  • Noticeable physical overactivity or extreme underactivity.

  • Tantrums or extreme distress for no apparent reason.

  • Lack of response to verbal cues or requests, as if they cannot hear.

  • Inappropriate attachment to objects.

  • Uneven developmental skills; may not want to kick ball but can stack blocks.

  • Difficulty in expressing needs, use of gestures or pointing instead of words.

  • Difficulty in understanding what is said regardless of ability to perform specific task before.

Remember - if these behaviors sound familiar to you, please get a professional evaluation from a trained psychiatrist in your area. They can help ensure that your child or loved one is properly diagnosed.
