Ana Bahebek

Words and music by Marji Hazen:

One of my roommates at Bluffton College was from Jordan. Leila taught me just enough Arabic to amuse some of the other foreign students..
Ana bahebek  -- I love you.
Ana habibtek --  You love me.
Habibi, bus ni --  Dear one, kiss me.

It was written about Leila's descriptions of the lovely lovely men she said lived back home where she came from. The camel story came from a cartoon called Hot Sands that was a part of my father's 8mm movie collection. This is an example of a song that has taken on unintended significance in recent years.
I had no idea that fifty years later it would become a weapon in the War On Terrorism. Didn't intend it that way. I never used to have to be careful where I sang it in the dear innocent days of old.
