| The following Article was taken from the Ironton Evening Tribune, datedTuesday, September 27, 1927, Page 10: C & O SWITCHMAN KILLED TODAY IN RUSSEL YARDS --------------------------------------- STANLEY J. BURCHAM FALLS UNDER ENGINE ---------------------------------------- Stanley J. Burcham, age 30years, Brakeman at the Russell C & O terminal, was fatally injured at the Russel yard this morning at 7 o'clock when he slipped while stepping from one footboard to another on a yad engine and fell beneath the wheels. He died twenty minutes later, after being removed to the Marting hospital in the Carman ambulance. Mr. Burcham had been at the Russell terminal during the last __ years and during the greater part of that time he lived in this city, on North Second Street about three squares from the bridge approach. monday he moved to Ashland,Ky. The yard engine on which he was working was in the east end of the west-bound receiving yard when Burcham starting climbing across the drawbar from one step to another. He lost his footing in some manner and fell under the wheels, which passed over and mangled his right leg from the foot to the hip. He was dying when placed in the ambulance. Art Milem, road foreman of engines, was an eye witness of the accident and was first to reach Burcham. Albert C. Fossen, engineer, S. R.Hannon, fireman, Frank Kilgore, conductor and C. B. Barber, brakeman, all members of the crew with which Burcham was working, also witnessed the accident and assisted the injured man during his dying moments. All were horror-stricken by the accident. They expressed high regard for Mr.Burcham and his abilities as a workman. His was the first fatal accidentin the transportation department of Russell during the last twelve months. Mr. Burchamis survived by his widow and two children. He had many friends in railroad circles of Ironton and Russell andannouncement of his fata accident will be a grevious blow to all.
