Samuel Hughes lived in Whitley Point district of Moultrie County, Illinois during the mid 1830s. He was known to be a blacksmith. In 1839 Samuel is listed as a plaintiff in a case brought against three Green brothers for a sum of $52.50. The parties agree to arbitrate and chose 2 arbitrators, Harman Smith and Israel Ellis. The arbitrators ruled on July 27, 1839 in his favor . Samuel's daughter, Mary would go on to marry Israel Ellis' son Franklin. Samuel was also a member of the second petit jury of Moultrie County in 1843. Sometime around 1849 Samuel moved his family to the Cabool area of Texax County, Missouri. Mary his daughter and Franklin also left at this time to Missouri. Samuel lived next door to Mary and Franklin until he died in 1881.
