| Rufus was an educator. He was one of the first teachers at the Trace School in 1914. The Trace School was a one room school on Trace Fork in Butler School District of Wayne County, WV. On Aug 28 1914 a larger building was built, about a mile down the road, from the original location. One and 3/4 acres of land was purchased from Levi and Julia Ellis for the sum of $115.00. In November of 1919 The Levi Ellis farm was sold to Curtis Ferguson. A third new Trace School was built on this property and showed declining enrollment until the 1937 - 1938 school year. The school was closed in 1945 and students were transported to Fort Gay Elementary. Rufus was one of the first individuals to own a car in the Trace community.
