James P. Poteet
     The Poteet family began with John P. Poteet, an Italian, born ca 1695. His son, James Poteet born ca 1720 died after 1783, married Elizabeth Crabtree born 5 Nov 1728 Baltimore, Maryland. Their son William Poteet, Sr. (1744,1745 Augusta County, VA - ca 1821 Franklin Co, VA) married Kiziah?. William & Kiziah's son, James W. Poteet (1771 Franklin Co, Virginia died before 1830 Cabell Co, VA), married 14 Dec 1796 Franklin Co Sarah Arthur (ca 1780 Franklin Co - after 1840 Cabel Co). James sold land to his father in 1810 before moving to Cabell Co. Children:

(3) Skelton Poteet (1806 Franklin Co, VA - 1 Apr 1885 of Bright's Disease) married 23 Oct 1831 Cabell Co, Martha McGinnis (1820 - 28 Nov 1889) d/o Samuel McGinnis; children:
(a)Lewis De Clinton Poteet (16 Aug 1832 - 30 Jan 1947);
(b) Clementhis J. Poteet (12 Nov 1833 - 23 Mar 1914) married (1) 12 Nov 1862 America Wentz d/o William Wentz, married (2) 1869 Sarah Ellen Dillon d/o Reese & Adelaide Dillon
(c) Hester Ann Poteet (1836 - 1839) children by America; Albert J. (1861 - 1882), George B. (1862 - 1946) and by Sarah: James H. (1884 - 1891) and Willia Nevada (1888);
(d) James William (29 Dec 1837); Oliver S. (3 Nov 1841 - 5 Mar 1842);
(e) Susan Catherine (27 Jan 1843) married Luke Johnson;

(g) Isabelle (28 Nov 1845 - Feb 1847) married 1834 Martin Keiser;
(h) John F. (5 Feb 1848 - 5 Aug 1862) married 1880 Sarah Dillon.
(4) Thomas J. Poteet (1813) married 12 Apr 1838 Cabell Co, VA Tryphinia Davis (born 1822 VA). Thomas owned 266 acres of land on the Big Sandy River, the boundary between Kentucky and West Virginia; was listed in the 1870 Census as a wool carder; by 1990 he had sold his land. His eight children were born in Kentucky. One son, Lewis Poteet (1855 Boyd Co., KY - 31 May 1935 Cabell Co), married 1883 Cabell Co Martha Jane Wells, d/o Joshua C & Elizabeth E. Wells (1857 Lawrence Co, OH - died Macon, MO).
(5) Catherine Poteet (1814 Cabell Co, VA) married 12 Oct 1834 Martin Keeser/Keyser.
(6) Susan Arminda Poteet (30 Sept 1817 - 1847) married 29 Nov 1832 Cabell Co Luke S. Johnson born 3 Nov 1807 Pomfret, Windsor, Vermont. He died 9 Dec Salt Lake City, Utah. Their two duaghters were born in Kirkland, Lake Co., Ohio.
