EVENTS FOR 2008-2009

SEPTEMBER, 2008

The featured event will be the first recital in the Main Street Medina Artist Series, 8:00 p.m., September 20 at Medina's Broadway Hall (2nd floor, Medina County Administration Building). The noted pianist Sedmara Zakarian Rutstein will present an all-Russian program. Rutstein is a faculty member of the Oberlin College Conservatory. Purchase tickets in advance on your own: $25 ($20 for Seniors) at Buehler's stores. Members will meet at the Hall. Season subscriptions for four events may be purchased through the website at http://www.mainstreetmedina.com

A Russian themed dinner prior to the performance will be held at Main Street Cafe for ticket holders only. The cafe is offering a discount to subscribers for this dinner with a $20 gift certificate for only $10. This certificate must be used only on performance night. If you wish to attend the dinner as part of the group, please contact Marilyn Sigel by Sept. 15, at DAMARFARM@aol.com . AAUW members, as well as subscribers, are invited to a reception for the pianist at Main Street Cafe following the performance. 

2007-2008 ACTIVITIES

-----Members made an excursion to the unique Homerville Farmer's Produce Auction followed by a bar-b-que at the Homeville farm of Marilyn and David Sigel.

-----A&E  visited the three-acre Heirloom Rose Garden at Wooster's Ohio State Agriculture Research and Development Center.

-----Led by "tour directors" Marilyn and David Sigel, the group ventured to Amish country -- Wayne and Holmes County . Highlights included Heini's Cheese Chalet, Ashery Country Store, Lehman's Hardware and Museum and two food stops: Farmstead Restaurant in Berlin, and Troyer's Home Pantry bakery in Apple Creek.

-----The annual theater excursion for book discussion groups and A&E. We attended the performance of William Gibson's Golda's Balcony, at Actors' Summit in Hudson. 

-----An exclusive tour of the A.I. Root Company's candlemaking facilities at 623 W. Liberty St., Medina.

2006-2007 ACTIVITIES

-----"Monet in Normandy" exhibit at the Cleveland Museum of Art with lunch at the Museum Cafe.

-----Tour of the printing and editorial departments of a big city newspaper, The Plain Dealer.

-----Arts and Entertainment met Daytime Book Discussion Group for an outing to the Sun., Nov. 5th matinee performance of George Bernard Shaw's Arms and the Man at the Actors' Theatre, Hudson. Lunch together prior to the performance.

-----Gallery hopping at studios and shops in Cleveland's Little Italy. Lunch at the local bakery-cafe.

2005-2006 ACTIVITIES: 

-----Cradle of Christianity: Treasures from the Holy Land exhibit at the Maltz Museum of Jewish History in Beachwood.  (http://www.maltzjewishmuseum.org/

-----With its founder/director as our personal docent -- Dr. James Banks, Prof. Emeritus -- we visited the Crile Archives and Center for Military History Education on the Western Campus of Cuyahoga Community College, Parma. 

-----Following Medina County Common Pleas Judge Chris Collier's informative and energetic presentation at the January membership meeting, members expressed interest in seeing the Judge in action. We observed the Drug Court session Wed. April 26, at the courthouse. Prior to the courtroom session, we met for lunch at 1:00 in uptown Medina. 

-----The new Buckeye Library, located at Columbia and Wolfe Roads, near the Buckeye Schools campus, has gained top-notch marks from the community for its user-friendly environment and innovative services.

We took a guided tour of the facilities on March 16 with AAUW member Theresa Laffey, Director of Outreach Services for Medina County District Library. Following the tour, the group lunched at the Riverton Tavern in Valley City. 

-----Arts and Entertainment joined with the Book Discussion Group to see a matinee performance of Arthur Miller's All My Sons, at the College of Wooster's Schoolroy Theatre, inside the Freedlander Theatre complex. Prior to the performance, the group met for brunch in the Alumni Room of the Wooster Inn.
