BE WISE CAMP

AAUW/Ohio BE WISE Camp is a mathematics and science camp designed to develop interest, excitement and self-confidence in young women who will be entering grades 7 or 8. It has been in operation for 20 years and was a prototype for academic camps in Ohio. Space is available for no more than 130 campers; the camp maintains a teacher/ student ratio of 1:12.

The week-long residence camp for Ohio girls features a separate curriculum for each grade level and emphasizes hands-on activities in mathematics and science. The 2008 camp will be held on the campus of Denison University in Granville, Ohio, from June 15-20.

Specific objectives for campers are:
bulletTo discover that doing mathematics and science is fun
bulletTo develop critical thinking skills
bulletTo reduce mathematics and science anxiety
bulletTo expand mathematics and science career expectations and options
bulletTo provide positive career role models.

Camp fees of $465 for 2008 includes room, board and all educational materials.

Medina County Branch selects two girls from among Medina County applicants to represent the county at the camp and pays a partial scholarship ($415) for each . Applications for these two camperships closed the second week in March. Selections are made based upon the recommendations of teachers and counselors. A girl's strong interest in math and science is an important factor in the award process. Contact person for Medina scholarship applicants is Carol Thombs: 330-948-1343, or  cb98thombs@verizon.net .
