"I'm on the Road
Again" I found this car posted
on an auto parts store bulletin board in 1988.
The image is the same image I found along with a
brief description of the items that came with
car. Which was not much! Basically a basket case
all the way! Perfect for my intentions of
building a Street Rod Not much to look at but as
many others who owned it before me I seen
potential.
Over the years I found out the car had been a
racecar. Possibly an old Gasser class racecar as
many still remaining old cars once were. It had
been name the "Orange Crate". Note the
orange head light bucket still a reflection of
its heritage. I had a chance to speak with the
first Pennsylvania owner who brought it from New
York State. He told me when he bought it there
was a figure of a guy painted on the side behind
the doors. The guy was jumping up and down on an
orange crate with his eyes bugging out! The car
was orange thus the "Orange Crate"! |
| The car has passed
through a succession of many owners over the
years locally. When it was a drag car it had a
Chrysler 413cu.in. for a power plant. I still
have the original Orange Hood with the stenciled
"413cu.in Super Sport" on the sides. As
in the case of many former race cars much gets
cut out of the car and stripped to reduce the
over all weight of the vehicle. This project had
been no different as for the firewall; some of
the floorboard, transmission cover and even the
inner trunk lid support framing had been cut out.
Each of the different owners over the years did
some work to restore these areas. I also have
heard at one time it even a Cadillac motor was
fitted to to power it. But when it became my turn
it was up to me to finish a few of these areas
not yet touched. Not to mention a few more
unexpected since the car as I found out had sat
outsider for a number of years neglected. Not
uncommon for old cars but a part of its history I
did not know for sure until 2005. However not
surprised since I recall after sand blasting in
1988 much of the lower part of the car need
restored and rebuilt. Which was likely a result
of sitting outside for a long period of time. |
