The Ham WeblogTM

January 2, 2001

Well, looks like we survived 'em again! The Holidays, that is. Hope yours was all you expected...and more! Ours was sure busy enough. Lots of visiting...and visitors. Just what we wanted. Unfortunately, the cookies lasted longer than our guests, HI! Ah, well.... I guess that's just about the same everywhere.

And, as always, I'm still looking for more input about The Ham WeblogTM. Any comments, suggestions, or a favorite site: Just Email Me.

Anyway, check out Wired News.
Well this wasNews at the time I first read it. Gen. Colin Powell's son to become FCC head. There's a lot more interesting stuff at this site, too, so it's worth a read!

Have you heard anything about a virus called A Great Shockwave Flash Movie?
I don't know if this is a hoax or not, but I did get email about it. If you've heard anything on it, please Email Me. The link I was given does not work. Here it is anyways:

Let's keep checking Propagation. That's always interesting...and always changing!
WWV Propagation. The site's text only, but that makes it load quickly, and the info you want is text anyway, so it works out FB.

Here's a neat site, NSSDC OMNIWeb, though I'll admit, I haven't the foggiest idea what they're talking about!!
I know it has to do with Solar Wind and such, but look at subsequent pages. Let me know if you figure it all out, HI! Ok, so I have an idea about solar wind and magnetic fields. But, I haven't the least idea of what "1-hour-resolution "near-Earth" solar wind magnetic field and plasma data, energetic proton fluxes (1-60 MeV)" is all about. Do you?

Just thought I'd pass the info along...may be useful to somebody somewhere.

In a similar vein, take a look at Solar Terrestrial Activity Report
GEE, this stuff gets deep! It was lots easier years ago when you just heard "Yeah, Jack, they say Cycle 20 is gonna peak next spring." And we all thought that some astronomer somewhere just counted the sunspots with the proper adapter attached to his telescope!!!
Well, at least at this site, I see a familiar question posed (as well as some historical info that I can at least say sounds familiar):
  • Solar cycles 21-23 (last update January 2, 2001) - Has cycle 23 peaked?
  • Solar cycles 1-20
  • Graphical comparison of cycles 21, 22 and 23 (last update January 2, 2001)
  • Graphical comparison of cycles 10, 13, 17, 20 and 23 (last update January 2, 2001)
  • Historical solar and geomagnetic data charts 1954-2000 (last update October 20, 2000)
Finally, a forecast:
The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to unsettled on January 9-11. Long distance medium wave (AM) band propagation along east-west paths over high and upper middle latitudes is fair.

This is a neat site. Be sure to check it out!

Speaking of propagation, what's new in contesting? Checked out ARRL Contest Branch.
Would you believe...although I did find several sites listed in Yahoo! under a search for "contests," virtually nothing to hang your hat on except ARRL. So, here goes:
  • CQ WW 160-Meter DX Contest, CW, sponsored by CQ Magazine, from 2200Z Jan 26 until 1600Z Jan 28 (phone is 2200Z Feb 23 until 1600Z Feb 25)
  • REF French Contest, CW, sponsored by Reseau des Emetteurs Français, from 0600Z Jan 27 until 1800Z Jan 28 (phone is 0600Z Feb 24 until 1800Z Feb 25).
  • UBA Contest, phone, sponsored by Unie van de Belgische Amateurzenders and the EC Commission for Communication, Information and Culture, from 1300Z Jan 27 until 1300Z Jan 28 (CW is 1300Z Feb 24 until 1300Z Feb 25). 80 40 20 15 10 meters only.

Ok, so let's check out CQ Magazine.
Would you believe....other than a mention of the CQ World Wide 160 Meter Contest and the CQ/RTTY Journal RTTY WPX Contest there's no mention of contests at all! Wow!!
