The Ham WeblogTM

January 30, 2001

I apologize for the incomplete link in the last issue. Hope it didn't inconvenience anyone. A new issue [January 23, 2001] attempted to address the error.

Received a few suggestions since the last Ham Weblog:

  • Visit Ham Swap Shops
  • Start Listing Ham Swap Gear
  • Start a Listing of "I wanna get in touch with....."
  • List Hamfests and Special Events
  • Publish short "Reflections" or Memories stories about ham radio

By the way, have YOU  Emailed Me with comments, suggestions, or a favorite site for The Ham WeblogTM? Only takes a minute...Do it now, ok?

Ok, since we're keeping WWV Propagation as a regular, I figured it should go "up-top." Lots of hams want to check this right away anyway.

Ok, so now on to the Swap-n-Shops.

Check out SHARC-NET Swap & Shop.
This is a Southwestern Pennsylvania Club Website. The South Hills ARC sponsors an on-line Swap and Shop.
Four categories are high-lighted [the last was "Under Construction" when we visited]:

The scrolling links may be a bit hard to hit or those of us who are video-game challenged! Fortunately, there is a navigation listing to the left, and you can click on these same four categories.

Ok, here's another site:   Virtual Hamfest.
This one's been on awhile -- 1995. The site has nine pages (in addition to the Home Page), of which four direct you to "sales" activity:

The other five pages offer useful info, but not direct shopping information:

Here's a Canadian Site:   VA3WM Swap 'n' Shop.
This site offers non-amateur shopping as well as hobby-specific products.

In addition, you can post as well as buy items here. In addition, VA3WM offers a currency exchange link so you can compare your currency to some 90 global currencies.

Finally, Willis provides a link to instructions so you can place the Ham Radio Swap Shop logo as a link on your website.

Well, I searched, but the sites above are the only "swap" sites I found...   If you know of any others, Email Me and I'll include 'em.

New Ideas Coming!
As I said "up-top," we received several suggestions, which we're going to implement in the hope that we make The Ham WeblogTM a valuable part of your amateur radio related web surfing. The new areas now in the preparation stage are shown below. And, more so than before, I need your help! Without input from You, this project won't go anywhere.
So, read on and then submit...submit...submit!!

The Ham WeblogTM Trader.
One of the suggestions for The Ham WeblogTM was a list of ham gear for sale or trade. So, here's your chance.

What sort of ground rules do we need here?

  • Well, items for sale or trade should be related in some way to amateur radio.
  • Items must represent legal equipment, eg., no mods to make gear illegal to use.
  • Limit your ad to 50 words or less.
  • Limit any visuals, i.e., photos, to jpeg or gif formats of 70KB max.
  • Term of posting:   We have not set a limit here yet, but listings won't be perpetual.
  • Items listed in our Trader Page are limited to non-commercial "sellers."
  • Commercial sellers...please Email Me for a commercial quotation.

How do you submit Trader listings? Just Email Me.

NOTICE:   The Ham WeblogTM makes no representation, warranty, or guarantee of merchantability, quality, or use of any item listed in these pages. All items offered are considered to be the sole property of the seller, and any representation of use rests with the seller. Negotiations between seller and buyer shall be direct and not involve The Ham WeblogTM.
The Ham WeblogTM shall be held free of all liability in any sales or trade transaction for any item listed on these pages. We reserve the right to accept or reject any item for listing on this site

I wanna get in touch with....
Ok, you've probably read comparable pieces in QST or the other ham pubs. Well, we'll accept these requests, too. Again, as with Trader items, let's keep 'em brief...under 50 words should do it. Also, we reserve the right to reject items for this listing.

How do you submit "in touch with" requests? Just Email Me.

Morse

Sure, we'll list your Hamfest or other Special Event, too.
Just Email Me with all the particulars.

Here's an area you don't find in the often in the major ham pubs:   Reflections and Memories.
I don't know about you, but I always enjoyed the personal side of ham radio just as much as the technical. When I was a kid, I absorbed as many Hashifisti Scratchi stories as I could find! John Troster's occasional piece in QST was always a good read, too. And, the stories published in Worldradio always make for entertaining reading.

Well, this is the type of story I'm looking for. We'll keep 'em short (around 500 words or so...but I'm not going to sit there and count words, HI! With a short piece, you have to keep focus on just that one point....event....feeling -- well, you get the drift :)   And, as with all other submissions, we reserve the right to accept or reject all submissions.

Be sure you read and understand these caveats:

  • Although you hold the copyright to any piece you create, if you submit it to The Ham WeblogTM, we assume we have your permission to publish what you send us.
  • Submissions are made without expectation of compensation. We're presenting submissions as a means of sharing experiences.
  • We reserve the right to edit material as necessary.
  • Yes, you can submit your stories elsewhere, or publish them yourself. We don't stake out "All Rights" or "First Serial Rights," etc. However,
  • We do reserve the right to compile submissions into future published works, including via Internet or other media. Any story published will carry the author's by-line, i.e., name and call (if applicable).

That said, how do you submit stories? You got it...Just Email Me the text. Now, I gotta admit, I'd really rather see text files (Notepad) than full-fledged word processing files (Word, WordPerfect, etc.), but...... go ahead!

Morse

Well, that wraps it up for today. Please, drop me an email and let me know what you think about The Ham Weblog, ok? It's easy; just Email K3LBP!
