The Ham WeblogTM

December 8, 2000

OK... so, what did you think of our first edition? Hope it was helpful, or at least not painful! Well, actually, I'm planning to continue in this vein for a couple more editions anyways; that is, unless I get calls late at night and bangs at the door. I want your input--in fact, PLEASE comment. I need your help so I can make this successful. So, if you've got a comment, suggestion, or a favorite site, or one you think should be featured, Email Me. And, by all means, pass this page on to others, ok?
There's no real plan of attack to this....at least not yet. Maybe it'll be decided based on input...Hmmmmmmm? But, in any case, I think the plan for the moment will be to hit a couple of major manufacturers or suppliers, then jump to some of the smaller players.

First on today's list is Alinco USA.
Well, I see that Alinco's got a Newsletter here, so I was about to tell you to check it out. But, uh-huh. You have to subscribe to it via email. Gee, wonder why? Seems it would be a whole lot easier to post it here...unless...Alinco wants to create a mailing list, HI, HI!
Ah...I see that there's some free software to be put on the server soon. It's for "the X2." Would that be their EX-2?
Hey! Check out the FAQ page. Here's an item of interest:   Ham Fest Promotional Request Items. What club wouldn't be? The FAQ is pretty extensive, so it's worth a read.
Here's a neat feature:   Parts & Service. Scroll down through it. You actually can order parts online.
You'd think I was really partial to Alinco the way I keep finding neat stuff here, but honest, there's neat stuff here and I just think you oughta check it out. For instance, here's another nice feature:   Archives. Especially if you're looking at used gear or want to check features of an oldie of your own.

Next stop:   Kenwood...
Well, just about what you'd expect, although I was intrigued by the imagemap at the top of this page. It says News, so I clicked there. But, I was disappointed. It takes me to a PR page that hasn't been updated since October 14, 1999! C'mon, guys. That AIN'T news!
And I see that Kenwood's still up in the air over its ultimate, new HF rig. They'll let you submit your email address so that they can keep you posted.

Well, their Events page does list 4 of the big hamfests for 2001, but it's not very exciting! Just the dates and a brief description of the hamfest (eg., Dayton Hamvention -- celebrating 50 years, and that it's sponsored by DARA). I think Kenwood better spend some time on its new HF rig and its website!

R. L. Drake
I know...I know...but this one is for nostalgia. Oh, don't get me wrong. Drake's out there, but, not too much for ham radio these days. Maybe that'll change someday? Lord, PLEASE!!!

These days, Drake is pretty much limited to satellite and CATV enterprises, although they do still carry a hefty inventory of amateur equipment Parts. Now, don't try this! I copied the Parts List to the clipboard so I could report its size. Locked up the PC for close to 10 minutes (and this is a Pentium III, 550 MHz w/128 MB of RAM)! Anyway, the parts data is 22 pages long, and includes an online ordering form. So there!

One more in the bigger category:   SGC
Well, the site's a bit busy, but that's just personal opinion. Uh-oh! If you sent SGC an email between November 22 and 27, better re-send it. I guess they were busy reconfiguring the server or some such. But, hey...At least they told us!
While you're there, be sure to check out the NEW page. There are five items listed as new in November:
  • SGC's new online store opens for business
  • New SG-230 Manual
  • Alaska Hamfest 2000
  • New Design of SGC Homepage
  • SG-2020 $25 Rebate
  • Join our new, free mailing list!

All-in-all, there are some 25 new items listed, although the above are the most current.

Finally, SGC offers a comprehensive [no, I didn't download it; learned my lesson at Drake, HI, HI!]. Check SGC's Site Index.

Now for the smaller outfits!

Need a power supply? Let's check Astron
Astron's website includes a complete listing of their power supplies. However, there's not much in the way of any extra info to be had here; just a bare-bones site. Comment: Direct and utilitarian.

Ok, let's take a look at Tennadyne
Neat Home page! Wow for a tower and beam like that!! Nice summary of Antenna Facts, too. Brief but informative.
Antenna Photos are nice, but a frame of reference would be nice...er, just how big is BIG? Sure would love to buy one, though, HI!
Tennadyne also gives a complete set of specs/prices for each antenna, and an Order Form. All-in-all, a nice site. By the way, the Somalia page gives a very short story of Tennadyne antennas in that country by Pakistani UN troops.

What's New with Joe WB2JKJ & Jr. High #22
Well, well, well.....Here's one for the LHVHFS & Coke Center boys [JVQ es YYM, of course]! Win a brand new Icom IC-706 from the Crew at Jr. High School @22 in NYC. Details at What's New.
Also, looks like 22 Crew had a vacation! Nassau in the Bahamas, WOW! Joe, you had your work cut out, supervising a crowd of kids on that one, HI, HI!
Finally, the Crew posed for Snapshots.

What's New @ BayPac?
Ok, the site's been just recently updated What's New. Hey, that's what they say. I haven't checked before. Anyway, the site is a clean design [in Frames], but that's not a problem for later versions of IE or Netscape.
There's a whole slew of info offered on Product Reviews, QST and 73 among them.
Finally, the complete family of products [some 18 of 'em] are described under 4 categories:
And much, much more! For a small outfit, they're really got a site that's informative.

If you missed earlier editions, check out the Archives

Well, that wraps it up for our first try. Please, drop me an email and let me know what you think about The Ham Weblog, ok? It's easy; just Email K3LBP!
