A Little Drip ...... or, You Hear Me Where???

"Glenn....Glenn, are you talking on that radio again ?"

"Glenn..."

"Yeah, Mom. What's the matter?"

"Glenn, do you remember how I told you I was hearing you down here every time you talk on that radio? How I can hear you? Don't you remember?"

"Mom, that just ain't possible," I said. "There's just no way you can hear me talking on the kitchen sink! You're hearing things. Probably hearing my voice traveling through the floor. Or maybe through the registers."

And this would go on two, three times a week. Could she hear me, or rather my voice, coming from the kitchen sink? Nah....ain't possible!

Well, we talked about it on the air; we talked about it in school. Finally, my buddy, Art, was over the house one afternoon and, sure enough, my mother claimed to hear me over the sink again. We just laughed, but she COULD get insistent, so I decided to humor her and go down and listen. We set up a test, where Art would talk over my rig and I'd listen at the sink, HI, HI!!

So, down I went. And I called up to Art to go on the air. I don't recall who he worked, or if he just tested, but sure enough, there it was: Art's voice coming out of the sink faucet!!

Now, it was a very small voice. Very, very small. But, still a voice! And, of course, Mom just stood there with that "I told you so" look on her face.

Well, that was many years ago; and we know much more about audio rectification and all that. But, back then...as teenagers, we just figured it was Mom's imagination. Now that I think back on it, I think my Dad had put a new brass faucet in the hot water valve, and being that the valve body itself was probably galvanized, we were experiencing just enough corrosion between the dissimilar metals to create the diode rectification necessary.....to hear Glenn talking in that small, small voice over Mom's kitchen sink!
