The CSX double track mainline follows the windy path of the Youghiogheny River from Confluence, PA at MilePost 243 northwest to McKeesport, PA. (at MP 314) passing through Connellsville and the other towns and places with red labels on the map. The Connellsville Yard once was a very active Yard, but recently track was removed from it. A few work trains stop daily to pick up and drop off cars. Several other eastbound trains stop each day to take on helpers that will push them up the mountains on their way to Cumberland, MD.
The Southwest Pennsylvania (SWP) Shortline Railroad serves customers located near tracks that branch off the CSX mainline. The track that leaves the mainline at Broadford (aerial photo) runs through Mount Pleasant to the SONY plant. At Everson the track crosses over a former Penn Central line and SWP can switch over to that track which runs through Scottdale, Hunker and Youngwood to Radebaugh where SWP exchanges cars with Conrail(now Norfolk Southern). At Hunker a branch track runs to Yukon where SWP services Menasha Corp. The branch that leaves the mainline at Green Junction crosses over the river and runs through Dunbar and Mount Braddock to Hopwood. This track is the former FM&P line that runs to Fairmont, WVa. By switching to the former Penn Central track just outside of Uniontown SWP can service customers in Uniontown.
