HUSBAND - John Ellis O'BRYAN Ref- IGI index fo Kentucky. 1860 thru
1890 census for Johnson Co. Ky. Mrs. Mary Clark Holbrooks papers.
John Ellis and Louisa Caroline were first cousins. He was a
photographer and traveled about the countryside, making pictures. He
also taught both singing and writing in several of the surrounding
communities. Both he and Caroline were devout United Baptist. (His
father, though not an ordained minister, would give a short talk at the
beginning of the Church service, and was a very active lay member of the
Church. Caroline's grandfather, William Coffee, was a prominent United
Baptist minister.) Their deaths came only three days apart.
He had been afflicted most of his life with a heart condition.
Caroline became very ill, with pneumonia, John suddenly became worse and
died. Caroline was so ill, they felt they couldn't tell her that he
was dead. Finally, she asked, "He's dead, isn't he?" They had to tell
her "Yes." Then she said, "It doesn't really matter. I'll be with him
in a day or two, anyway." She died the following day.

CHILD 1 - James Valentine O'BRYAN Source: Sue Ellen Williams.
CHILD 3 - Elijah O'BRYAN Elijah and Ollie had gone to talk
and pray for Nellie LeMaster, at Whitehouse, who was quite ill with flu.
(Nellie LeMaster sas a step-sister to Ollie's mother Mahala Caroline
(Timy) Clarke who married James Melvin. Nellie was also a step-sister to
John Wilson Clark. Ollie was a niece to John Wilson Clark.)
Ollie also became ill with flu and a few days later so did Elijah.
Ollie and Nellie prayed together and talked and Ollie said, "I don't
have long for this world." Nellie said, "I'm not far behind you."
Ollie died on Friday at 10 to 7 and Nellie died on Saturday at 10 to 7.
Exactly 24 hours apart. At the time Ollie died, Elijah was so ill with
flu, the doctor said he had done all he could do and there would be no
need for him to come back. Elijah asked the relatives to hold up Ollie's
burial for a day or two so he could be buried with her. However, he did
not die, at this time. He asked his step-father-in-law, Will McCarty, to
put hot poultices on his chest. He said, "I know the doctor has given
up, but if you do this for me, you will save my life." Will and Timy
worked all night, standing over him and applying hot poultices to his
chest. They did save his life for he eventually recovered.
