WIFE - Margaret GRAHAM Margaret probably died at the home of
her daughter, Alicia. The informant on Margaret's death certificate was
James Whitworth, Alicia's husband. James and Alicia had lived in Ince-
in-Makerfield from about 1856 to at least 1871. On Margaret's death
certificate she is listed as the widow of Thomas Ferriman, a cotton
factory hand.
Doc. Death Cert. of Margaret - P.R.O., London, family group sheet
for Alicia from Flora Frood, Alicia's great grandaughter.
CHILD 1 - Holden FERRIMAN Holden probably worked in the cotton
mills as a boy. He did not learn to read or write. He came to Ohio
sometime between 1841 and l844. His wife and two children came after
him. He first settled in Sharon Twp., Medina County and became a
farmer. He later moved to Brunswick Twp. Medina County. He died in
1877 of Typhoid fever.
Medina County Gazette, 28 Sep 1877, p.1
"Seldom has this community been more deeply moved than in the
deaths and conjoint burial of two worthy and esteemed citizens of
Brunswick, Ohio. Mr. Holden Ferriman, which occured on the 2d inst. and
his wife, Nancy, on the day following, both of typhoid fever, he being
61 years of age, and she 57.
He came from England 37 years ago to seek a home here, leaving a
wife, who came alone to join him, after two years separation. Starting
with nothing, together both toiled, until they gained for themselves a
comfortable home, having made the last payment a short time before their
deaths. Their worth will appear in the fact that they had reared a
family of nine children, one of whom died in the army, and the rest
living, all of age, and mostly settled in life, are of good principles
and habits. Thus it appears they were kept together in their greatest
responsibilities, parental authority and love, through a time most
needed, till at length they alike sickened, and from expressed choice,
closed their life work together, and at a time when they could best be
spared. Following the two hearses which bore the remains of those once
quiet and industrious people, from a desolated home to Mt. Pleasant
chapel, where the funeral was held, and to the double grave, were one
hundred and five carriages. So large was the attendance that a hundred
citizens were unable to gain entrance to the exercises, which were
conducted by Rev. O.W. White, of Weymouth, whose discourse was founded
upon the text:"And in their death, they were not divided," IISamuel
I:23.
Years ago, Ray Ferriman copied an inscription from Holden and Nancy's
tombstone, which is now illegible:
"Now death bereaved us
of those we loved dear;
Our parents so faithful and kind.
And little we thought that
their end was so near --
That so soon they would
leave us behind."
Holden and Nancy are in the 1841 census in Beacom Fold, Werneth,
Chester Co. Holden is listed as a cotton weaver. The census was taken
in July and their 2nd child, Harriet, was born in August.
CHILD 2 - Robert FERRIMAN Doc. Christening records - St. Luke's
Chapel, Heywood, Death cert. - General Register Office, London. On
Robert's death certificate his name is spelled Farriman. His mother,
Margaret was present at his death.
CHILD 3 - Thomas David FERRIMAN Thomas went by his second name, David.
He worked as a grinder. David died of chronic chest disease of many
years.
CHILD 4 - Collin FERRIMAN Collin came to Ohio in 1849. He settled in
Sharon Twp. with Holden and learned the trade of carpentry. He later
moved to Medina Twp. and had a farm as well. He taught himself to
read, write, and do math, since he did not learn as a child. In his
youth he had begun working in the cotton mills at the age of 8,
working 12 hours a day. Collin married first in England, but did not
bring a wife with him. Since he married 2nd in Medina County, his first
wife Had probably died. He came to America in 1849, settling first in
Sharon Twp. near his brother, Holden. He learned the trade of carpenter
and joiner. In 1854 he married Margaret Woodward, dau. of John and
Nancy (Waters) Woodward of Sharon. She died 27 Jan 1893. He married
third to Mrs. Mary Ingham in 1894. She died in 1902. Doc.;:
Christening record, death record - Medina County
Collin applied for naturalization in Medina Co. on 29 Sep 1852 (J/397)
and received his final cert. on 8 Nov 1854. (K/111)
"Mr. Ferriman had great courage and determination, overcoming the
adverse conditions that surrounded him. Without schooling, he learned
to read, write, and figure so that he was under no disability in doing
business, and by his love of reading and active mentality became a man
of more than ordinary intelligence. His industry and economy were
rewarded by a comfortable competence. He was a member of the Methodist
church for more than 60 years, and a local preacher in that
denomination. He confronted death without fear, expressing himself
ready and willing to go, making settlement of his affairs and giving
directions about his funeral, which took place at his late house and was
conducted by Rev. Mr. Thistle of Brunswick. Burial at Spring Grove
Cemetary". Doc.-Obituary-Medina County Gazette, marriage records -
Medina Co. Probate, first marriage, St. Mary's Parish Church of
Prestwich, Eng. Prestwich, Lanc.

Mary INGHAM
CHILD 6 - Joseph FERRIMAN Joseph is listed as a cotton weaver on his
death cert. Doc. death certificate - P.R.O., London
CHILD 7 - Benjamin FERRIMAN Benjamin was buried in Heywood on 8 Mar
l825 - 8 mos. old.
CHILD 8 - Alfred FERRIMAN Alfred died of injuries received when his
left arm was caught in a breaking machine. He was a factory laborer of
19.
DCHILD 9 - George FERRIMAN In the 1851 census for Oldham, George was
living in his mother's household. In the 1861 census he was living on
Rothwell St. in the Glodwick District of Oldham. He was listed as a
machinist.
CHILD 10 - Alicia FERRIMAN Alicia and James Whitworth arrived in
Australia on "The Scottish Knight" on 22 Jan 1877 in Cleveland Bay (115
day voyage). They moved to the Atherton Tablelands to the gold mines,
where the men of the family were miners. After 7 years they moved to
Lithgow, New South Wales, where there were coal mines. They had 8
children who died in infancy - the other 6 lived.
Townsville Herald - 23 Jan. 1877 " The Scottish Knight - This fine
Barque of 875 tons register, in charge of Captain McFarlane, left London
Docks the 22 September 1876, with 269 people & cargo aboard. There were
Assisted Passengers, Free Settlers & 3 Remittance passengers in all.
During the vorage measles broke out, but were not very severe. There
were no deaths on the vorage and there were five births. On arrival at
Townsville, Queensland, the passengers landed in two batches. The
single women & married people in the first trip, and the single men in
the second. The best accomodation for their reception was provided,
that could be got. The married folk were put into Webb's late hotel.
The single women in the premises formerly occupied by the Townsville
Times. The single men in a portion of Hanran's store.
Townsville Herald - 24 Jan. 1877 "The Scottish Knight Immigrant
vessel for Townsville, sailed from Gravesend (Eng.) on 29 Sep. 1876,
dropped anchor on 22 Jan 1877 at dusk, in Cleveland Bay, after a
protracted passage of 115 days. The Immigration Agents and Health
Officer will visit the ship tomorrow and if given a clean bill of
health, the Immigrants will be released from their floating prison.
We regret tp report that although the spacious Immigration Barracks
have been so long in hand, and are for all practical purposes completed,
the new arrivals are not to be bestowed there, but are to be distributed
in some empty stores in Flinders Street (the main street of Townsville)
Weare sure the general feelings are that, a piece of the usual bungling,
which invariably occurs in the case of Government works, has again been
perpetrated and somebody ought to be keelhauled for neglect of duty.
Instead of having the use of commodious and airly premises, retired from
the temptations, which are frequently so irresistable to the new
arrivals, after the restraints and confinement of a long vorage, these
unfortunates are to be housed in the heart of town, where it is certain
they will be much less comfortable themselves, and even if they are
exceptionly orderly, where they cannot interfere to a considerable
extent, with the comfort of others. There is really no excuse for such
slovenly lack of the most ordinary prudence and foresight on the Port
Authorities."

Brisbane, Aus. by Flora Frood.
