Invitational Tournament Quizzing Rules
Revised
September 2006 (Red=New, Blue=Edit,
Green=Moved)
1. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:
The invitational Quiz Tournament is an opportunity for young people from
different areas to come together and develop new friendships and strengthen
their relationship with God. Though this setting has its limitations it can
provide the setting for great things to happen. The sportsmanship and attitude
of the staff, coaches and team members are crucial to this experience being a
positive one for all involved.
2. TEAM REQUIREMENTS:
A. A team is defined as a group of quizzers that have worked together as a unit the entire season. exceptions must be approved by the Area Coordinators). A team is composed of no more than six quizzers, four regular and two substitutes. They should have one or two coaches. A team may have more quizzers on their roster but is limited to six members in a given match. Team members must be in the 7th grade or 13 years old, and not older than 20 as of January 1st of the quizzing year.
B. Tournament registration and fees must be submitted to your area coordinator in advance of the tournament. The deadline for registration and fees will be announced.
C. It is the coach's responsibility to understand the rules, the schedule and the time of the team's required matches. The coach is responsible for giving the team lineup to the scorekeeper before each match.
D. It is the coach's responsibility to carry a medical release form for each team member, under the age of 18 years. Release forms will be provided by the hosting area.
E. Each quizzer is required to display a nametag during each quiz match.
3. STAFF AND EQUIPMENT:
A. Staff and equipment from participating areas are used to conduct the quiz matches.
B. The Quizmaster has ultimate control of any quiz match. Questions are asked by the quizmaster. The quizmaster should confer with the material judges when a question or answer is in doubt. Each question should be preceded with "Question number _____".
C. Material Judges decide the accuracy of an answer along with the Quizmaster. They help judge the validity of contests made by either team. This is best done by the consensus of the judges and the Quizmaster. If a consesus cannot be reached, a majority vote will decide the right actions to take. The judges will follow each question to see that it is read correctly. They inform the quizmaster of any violation of the rules by either team. Two material judges are sufficient.
D. The timekeeper watches that the following time limits are observed:
1. 5 seconds for a quizzer to respond by pushing their button.
2. 5 seconds for a quizzer to start answering (any intelligible word) after
pushing their button.
3. 30 seconds for the quizzer to answer after they have pushed their button.
4. 30 seconds for each time-out.
The timekeeper is responsible to see that the equipment is in good working
order, and watches for any malfunctions and informs the Quizmaster
immediately if there is a malfunction. He will inform the Quizmaster of any
rule violations. Depending on the complexity of the
equipment, a timekeeper may not be required.
E. The scorekeeper keeps accurate record of the number of correct and incorrect questions answered by each quizzer, individual and team scores, errors, fouls, time- outs, lineups and substitutes. They score the progress of the match, and inform the quizmaster of violations, quizouts and error outs. They will also inform the quizmaster and team coach when a team uses their third time out. A blackboard or other means is used to keep an unofficial running team score so that the audience can see the progress. Official score sheets are used for the permanent records.
F. Eight quizzers, four from each team, sit at tables facing the audience and quizmaster. Hand operated, electronic equipment is used. The scorekeeper, timekeeper and judges are seated at a table facing the quizzers. The quizmaster uses a podium or is seated at the table with the judges.
4. QUESTION COMPOSITION:
A. Questions are all objective unless announced otherwise.
B. Headings are not considered text and will not be used for questions or answers.
C. All Questions will be based and judged on the 1984 copyright of the NEW INTERNATIONAL Version of the Bible.
A. The quizmaster stops reading the question immediately if the quizzer responds before the question is finished. The quizzer need not finish the question. The quizzer must give the correct answer within the 30 second limit.
B. A quizzer will not be required to provide an answer, if they push their button prior to the start of the question. Announcement of the question number is not considered part of the question. A question will be considered started, as soon as the quizmaster begins the first word of the actual question. In case of a situation question, the question is considered started with the "Who" of "Who aid this and to whom".
C. From the time the quizzer has pushed the button they have five seconds to begin their answer (any intelligible word), and thirty seconds to complete the answer.
D. The quizzer only has one try at the answer. The first answer is the one counted. A quizzer may change a word or phrase if he does so by interrupting himself before completing the sentence, if the answer is a one word answer, it must be interrupted before completion. If the quizzer's first answer is correct or incorrect the quizmaster need not wait the 30 seconds but may rule it immediately.
E. 2/3 Ruling: a question is not incorrect until a quizzer gives wrong information. Therefore, if the first part of their answer is wrong, the question should be judged incorrect. If the first and second parts are correct and the third is incorrect it will be judged correct. The 2/3 ruling applies only to a list of items or people when a specific number is not asked for.
F. If a question is judged incorrect, the corresponding quizzer on the opposing team has a chance to answer the same question as a bonus question. The question is read in its entirety for the bonus (see 11 C in the event of a vacant chair). The same time limits apply to a bonus answer.
G. Questions or parts thereof cannot be repeated after a quizzer has pushed their button. All bonus questions will be reread completely, but cannot be repeated.
H. All answers will be based and
judged on the 1984 copyright of the NEW INTERNATIONAL Version of the Bible.
A. A quiz match consists of two teams competing against each other in a 15 question match.
B. A correct answer counts ten points on regular and bonus questions.C. A quizzer receives an additional five points for quizzing out.
D. A quizzer quizzes out after scoring thirty total points. He may be replaced by a substitute or may choose to remain in the match. Time is given after each quiz out for a substitution to be made. This is not an automatic timeout. If he remains, he may answer only bonus questions.
E. Twenty points are added to a team score when four different quizzers have answered a regular question correctly. (Bonus questions do not count.)
F. Five points are deducted from a team score for each error, starting with the fifth error.
G. Five points are deducted from the team score for every foul.
H. In case of a tie, three additional questions will be asked. Each team will be given one additional timeout. If a tie remains, one question will be asked until the tie is resolved. The tie may be resolved with a correct answer, or with the reduction of points due to fouls or too many errors. In any case the question and bonus (if required) will be completed before the match is called.
B. Time-outs are not official until the Quizmaster recognizes the time-out. Time-outs can not be used to block contests. If a team wants to contest, the contest will be heard and ruled on before the time-out is granted.
C. Timeouts may be called back to back.
D. No timeouts may be called after the next to last question in a match.
E. The quizmaster may call technical time outs. They do not count against the team and can be used like a regular time out by the team.
B. A quizzer may not be replaced after he makes three errors. (See 11 .C)
C. A quizzer who has quizzed out may not reenter the match. (See 7.B)
D. Quizzers may change their chair positions only during a timeout.
B. No contest is allowed following a timeout
C. The team not contesting will be given the opportunity for a rebuttal at the time of the contest.
D. Contesting must be done by only one of the four quizzers. Assistance from the bench will result in a foul.
E. No further contesting is permitted after the decision has been reviewed. If a quizzer continues the discussion a foul will be called.
F. Bonus question answers may be contested.
G. Both questions and answers may be contested.
B. Failure to start the answer (any intelligible word) within five seconds or failure to complete the answer in thirty seconds results in an error.
C. After three errors, a quizzer is ineligible to answer any more questions in the match and that quizzer cannot be replaced. The scorekeeper will inform the quizmaster and the quizzer. The quizzer does not need to leave the match. If he chooses to leave, the chair will remain empty. When a vacant chair would have the opportunity to answer a bonus question, the quizzer in the next lower chair answers. I.e. 1-2, 2-3, 3-4, 4-1.
B. Fouls are called for:
1. Communication between quizzers and/or coaches from the time "question" is called and the answer is judged right or wrong. Any quizzer talking on the bench, from the team quizzing or others sitting on the bench. If the team is coached by more than one coach, they may confer together quietly.
2. Conduct that is unsportsmanlike or not in the best interest of the quiz.
One warning may be given.
3. Attempting to answer a question when a quizzer's light is not on. No error is given to the quizzer attempting to answer. A foul is given to the team. The quizzer whose light is on is given thirty seconds to answer the question.

& 11 C)
5. More than one quizzer contesting.
6. Open Bibles or study materials by quizzers on the bench.

Guidelines for Administration and Organization of the Invitational Tournament
A.
The
tournament is hosted by one of four areas, Atlantic Coast Conference in PA,
Northwest Ohio, Wayne County Ohio,
and West Liberty Ohio. The tournament will rotate between
areas, with the ACC area hosting every third year. The tournament is directed by the
coordinator from the hosting area, along with the assistance of coordinators
from other participating areas. It
is an Invitational Tournament and open to teams from other areas, using the same
text. The coordinators are
responsible for deciding the text to be used for each year.
B.
The host area is responsible for providing questions for the next
quizzing year. These questions are used in the local area quizzing and in
the tournament. New questions
should be sent to the coordinator from each area by December 1. The host area is responsible for the tournament details,
i.e., selecting questions, facility, awards, housing for guest teams and staff,
Sunday morning worship and the fees for that year.
C.
The
tournament is self-supporting by the fees paid.
The hosting area will determine the required fees for tournament
participation. Each area
coordinator is responsible to collect the fees from coaches, and send them to
the hosting area in advance of the tournament.
D.
Staff and equipment from participating areas are used to conduct the quiz
matches.
E.
Following the Invitational tournament, the coordinator’s from the
participating areas will meet and carry out the following agenda:
a.
Review the tournament and make suggestions for future tournaments.
b.
Determine the material to be studied during the next quizzing season.
c.
Determine which area will be responsible to write the questions for the
next quizzing season. The
Coordinator from the area responsible for writing the questions will see that
the questions are written and in the hands of the other Coordinators by December
1 before the next quiz season begins.
F. The host area from the previous year will be
responsible to assemble questions for the tournament matches.
(This is a change that may not take effect until 2008)
The coordinators and the staff of the participating areas critique these
questions before they are used for the tournament.
A joint meeting is held for this purpose in February.
The area that assembles the questions will be responsible to schedule the
meeting, secure a location, and to facilitate the meeting.
Time will be allotted at the meeting for the host area to discuss details
of the tournament.
G.
The tournament will be held each year during the last full weekend of
March. If Easter falls on that
weekend, the tournament will be moved one week earlier.
If the hosting area cannot secure facilities on the designated weekend,
they may propose an alternate weekend, which will require approval by the
coordinators from each of the participating areas.
