The Honorable Lady
Katla Ulfhedinn
formerly, Katla Ulfhednar
Shire of Sunderoak, AEthelmearc

For years Katla has been trying to break the false impression that coursing is all there is to the canine arts. Even though AEthelmearc has a Houndmistress, not a Luremistress, it's still confusing to a lot of folks.

Different breeds of dogs had various characteristics that made them valuable, especially in the hunt, which is Katla's primary field of research. Her dogs are greyhounds, chase dogs, so she demonstrates coursing with them. She has been a strong proponent of other sporting activities that recreate situations encountered by dogs during a hunt, such as tunneling and agility. Though her dogs cannot participate in these activities, she will happily share her experience with anyone wanting to put together classes and demonstrations of these arts for SCA events.

Katla's involvement with the canine community is only part of the teaching and advancement of her art that she does. It is by far the most visible. Her knowledge touches on a wide variety of topics, including historic dog breeds, training, care and accoutrements. She also researches and practices many of the arts that were used during a hunt or depict scenes from a hunt. She has cooked several feasts that included game dishes redacted from period sources.

A Sycamore was awarded to recognize her skill at illumination ... her body of work consists mostly of pieces inspired from "The Hunt" by Gaston Phoebus.

In recognition of her knowledge of hounds and the noble sport of the hunt, she was inducted into the Order of the Fleur d'AEthelmearc (Grant level award) in January 2009.

Her awareness and understanding is growing in leaps and bounds as she finds new sources of information in written form and through other arts that have a connection to the hunt.
